Bruxism, the term for grinding and clenching, can result in cracked and broken teeth that may need crowns or root canals or, if the crack is especially deep, extraction followed by implants. Other consequences of bruxism are headaches, painful jaw and neck muscles, and damage to the jaw joint itself.
Treatment
Treatment for Bruxism and TMJ pain involves a custom-fitted oral appliance worn at night that relaxes jaw muscles and joints. Sometimes a less intrusive daytime device is necessary. Additionally, Botox injections into the affected muscles will help relax the jaw and alleviate pain day and night for several months.
